It was a month or so away from the winter solstice and thoughts of this upcoming event were bouncing around my head when I began to organize my inspiration for a new project.

I was in the mood for creating a winter landscape as well as continuing to experiment with paper collage techniques.  I thought that it would be appropriate to create a peace of artwork inspired by images from my stay in Manitabe where I had originally developed these techniques.

Manitoba is a province that is fairly flat with pockets of small rolling hills mixed with sporadic evergreen bushes and young deciduous trees.  My winter scene shows that the trees and bushes have a slight snow covering and if you look closely at the snow covered ground you will notice a subtle change in the snow colour to show the shadows of the trees and bushes.

One aspect of the ‘cut’n’paste’ image that may not be immediately recognizable is the direction placement of the magazine cut-outs.  Usually, I will place the cut-out paper to follow the contour of an image or follow the direction of movement in an image.  For example… the sun radiates light in an outward direction so normally I would place the cut-out magazine peaces in a radiating way.  However, this art peace is quite different.  If you look closely, you will notice that the magazine cut-out bits are following the shapes of three squares.  Each square is a different size and two of them have been rotated on slight angles.

I wanted to see how the final texture would look when I used forced design elements that contradicted the natural flow of the image.
